ANGELES CITY -- City Vice Mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigting started Thursday the distribution of free shoes to 1,000 public school students here under her "Lakad sa Karunungan: Taking Small Steps for a Brighter Future " program that benefits indigent students.
Vega-Cabigting said that the program, which provides shoes to underprivileged students, aims to improve the morale and quality of educational experience of indigent students. She added that poor families could barely afford shoes for their children in public schools.
"This is a simple way of helping out students so that they would not feel left-out by their classmates. We want to help them on a psychological level that they can feel more confident in school. Also for health and safety reasons, we know that young students are very active and they should have proper footwear," Vega-Cabigting added.
She said that the program is made possible through the help of anonymous donors. On Thursday, Vega-Cabigting started the distribution at the M. Nepomuceno Elementary School and Villa Leoncia Elementary School.
The vice mayor said that the program is part of her advocacy for quality education in the city following the initiatives of Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan.
She added that the recent distribution is also an opportunity for her to meet local school officials and discuss issues that may be addressed through local legislation in the Angeles City Council.
Vega-Cabigting said that more students will receive shoes in the coming days.
