DRDO warns cops: Penalty for drug users is dismissal-A A +A

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – "Cops who are using illegal drugs have no place in the command."
Thus said Senior Superintendent Melvin Ramon Buenafe, deputy regional director for operations (DRDO) of the Police Regional Office 3, as he led on Friday surprise drug tests on personnel assigned at the Provincial Public Safety Company (PPSC) here.
Buenafe, Pampanga Police Director Senior Superintendent Marlon Valdez Madrid and PPSC commander Superintendent Bernard Perez conducted the random drug tests on 100 cops out of the total 269 PPSC personnel.
"This is a warning. You will be dismissed once we find out you are using illegal drugs," said Buenafe.
"The people are banking on you to protect them. How can you function well when you are doing illegal acts? So many want to be policemen and erring cops don't deserve to be here," he added.
Buenafe said due process is applied to suspected drug users in the command.
He added that there will be a "confirmatory test" on Philippine National Police (PNP) members who failed the initial drug tests.
"We are helping those hooked on drugs to get rehabilitation treatment. But dismissal in service is almost certain as the penalty," said Buenafe.
Madrid, who earlier conducted surprise drug tests on at least 126 cops, including police chiefs, vowed to support the campaign against illegal drugs.
"We must remove rotten tomatoes in our command so that we can seriously fight the illegal drugs in our society," said Madrid.
"The testing is also in line with the aggressive efforts of the Pampanga provincial government to eradicate the drug menace," he added. (Joey Pavia/Contributor)
