New DA director to ‘pursue’ national objectives

Sunday, March 19, 2017

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO— The newly-appointed regional director of Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Field Office in Central Luzon (RFO III) has committed to help in rice self sufficiency by 2019.

RFO regional director Roy Abaya said the DA national office has given a marching order of making food available and affordable for all by increasing rice production. This could also be achieved through expanded adaptation of use of high breed seed.

This, he said would greatly increase production as only 400, 000 farmers are using high breed rice. He added that farmers can get more yield with high breed rice varieties and this could contribute to the national government’s objective of achieving 100 percent rice sufficiency by 2019.

Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol earlier said that the agency would need to spend a hefty amount of P64 billion to achieve the national rice program goal over the next three years.

Of the amount, P31 billion were earmarked for spending in 2017.

The DA chief noted that there is an indication that rice production will increase from the current national average harvest of 4 metric tons per hectare.
