CITY OF SAN FERNANDO - Barangay officials from the 35 barangays of this city and personnel from the city, provincial and regional health offices converged at the Heroes Hall on August 11 for the “Emerging and Re-Emerging Diseases Summit.”
The activity seeks to raise the level of awareness of Fernandinos on the mosquito-borne diseases such as Dengue and Japanese Encephalitis (JE).
Among the topics discussed were the JE Global, Philippine and Regional update; epidemiology and case definition of JE, specimen collection and transport and availability of diphtheria anti-toxins; and presentation on environment sanitation, vector surveillance and different mosquito species.
Rural Health Physician and Communicable Diseases Cluster Program Medical Coordinator Dr. Renely Tungol said that aside from dengue cases, the City Health Office is also in full monitoring of JE adding that since last year, there have already been 25 JE cases in San Fernando, one of which was reported dead.
Tungol also mentioned that while there is no specific treatment for this endemic disease, the city will offer free JE vaccine for prevention starting next year.
In his speech, Mayor Edwin “Edsa” Santiago stressed the importance of keeping Fernandinos updated on the different diseases in order to maximize the prevention efforts of the entire community.
Also present during the activity were councilors Harvey Quiwa and Angie Hizon. (PR)
