CLARK FREEPORT -- A cardiac team at The Medical City (TMC) Clark has successfully conducted a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery on a patient who availed of the medical center’s new program for catastrophic illnesses - the PhilHealth Z-benefit packages.

Violeta Bagtas Hernandez, 64, of Bataan province, was presented to the media on Friday, a month after she underwent CABG under the TMC Clark’s PhilHealth Z benefit packages.

Hernandez, who was previously suffering from hypertension, lauded and thanked the hospital’s Cardiovascular Center and her attending physician, Dr. Roberto Cristobal, for her successful operation.

She said the physicians and medical personnel belonging to the cardiac team that handled the CABG are “competent, generous and caring.”

Under the new program, PhilHealth will cover as much as P550,000 for member patients needing a coronary bypass surgery.

Dr. Oliver Paul Chan, TMC Clark Medical Director said that they offer a lower price of P350,000 to P550,000 for CABG surgery compared to other medical centers in Metro Manila and Central Luzon with P750,000 to P1 million for the same type of surgery.

PhilHealth launched its Universal Health Care for all Filipinos program. With this, the government health agency issued a call for private health care institutions like the TMC to apply for contracting services for the delivery of any of its existing Z benefit packages.

The Z benefit packages, designed to address catastrophic illnesses, were initially available in selected government hospitals nationwide.

The program was designed for the treatment of breast and prostate cancer, acute lymphocytic leukemia, ventricular septal defect, tetralogy of fallot, coronary artery bypass graft, selected orthopedic implants, and others.

Only standard-risk outpatients are eligible for this package as determined by the screening committee from the TMC Clark Department of Cardiology together with the Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgeons (TCVs) who shall then refer the patient to the Philhealth officer for completion of requirements.

Eligible patients can avail of fixed co-pay with a minimum of P100,000 that convers for the specialized services for the holistic care management of the case.

For indigent patients, TMC Clark’s medical social worker can assist the patient’s family identify other sources of funding which may include the hospital’s partners.

Evelyn Luciano Yumul, TMC Clark Sales and Marketing Director, said their new Philhealth Z benefit package will allow the hospital’s world-class cardiovascular services more accessible to patients in Central Luzon and nearby provinces.

Patients in need of coronary artery bypass surgery, like Bataan-based Hernadez, need not go to Metro Manila to undergo this life-saving procedure.
