MINALIN -- “Can we retain our lost glory?”
These were the words of Chief Curriculum Implementation Division (CID) chief Cecilia Lacanlale as she encouraged campus journalists participating in the first day of the Division Secondary Schools Press Conference (DSSPC) held at Mother Mary Eugenie Center of Studies of School Inc. in Minalin town, Pampanga.
“How can we retain our lost glory in the Regional Secondary Schools Press Conference (RSSPC)? It is through awakening our grit, the passion in writing by continuously reading, practicing and coping with people,” she stated.
Pampanga, she added, from being the consistent overall champion in the regional level, placed only third last year.
The two-day competition is being participated in by public and private junior and senior high schools from the 10 clusters under the Division of Pampanga.
Meanwhile, Jonalyn Santos, a regional qualifier, Grade 12 copyreader and headline writer, shared her thoughts about Lacanlale’s remarks.
“This is my last year at itotodo ko na (and I’ll do my best). I and my coach trained intensively not just to win here (DSSPC) but in RSSPC as well,” Santos said.
While his fellow campus journalists felt tensed, Grade 7 and first time division qualifier in news writing Andrei Richard Carreon stated that he was not even nervous.
“I told myself to relax kasi mas lalo akong walang masusulat kapag nagpadala ako sa kaba tsaka I know my next year pa ako, another chance kumbaga (Because I’d end up writing nothing if I become too nervous. And I know I still have next year, another chance as they say),” Carreon said.
As the first day rolled on, the division qualifiers in the eight individual categories such as news, editorial, feature, science and health, sports, editorial cartooning, photojournalism and copyreading and headline writing, already showcased their journalistic skills.
Day two is allotted for the group categories such as radio scriptwriting and broadcasting, TV broadcasting and collaborative desktop publishing.
Based on the matrix, in the individual category, the top five will be announced as winners but only the top three will advance to the RSSPC.
The fourth and fifth placers will serve as alternates when any of the top three winners couldn’t join the RSSPC.
In the group contest, only the first placer will represent the division in the RSSPC next month.
