AROUND 2,000 marginalized but deserving Simonian youth were given the chance to pursue higher education as the Municipal Government of San Simon released on Friday their annual scholarship grants.
Mayor Leonora Wong, who personally led the distribution of financial grants, said that the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) keenly selected the beneficiaries to ensure that the most deserving ones will receive assistance.
She said that scholars were selected based on their family’s financial income and their willingness to study which are gauges of their semestral grades.
“Kung ako ang magdedesisyon, gusto ko lahat ng kabataan dito sa San Simon ay mabigyan ng scholarship pero alam natin na limitado ang budget ng gobyerno. That is the reason why gusto ko ‘yun talagang nangangailangan at deserving ang makakatanggap,” Wong said.
During the distribution, the scholars accompanied by their respective parents received half of their annual grants amounting to P2,500 each.
Wong said that Friday’s beneficiaries were just part of the total 3,200 students who regularly receive cash grants from the local government.
She disclosed that more than P5 million is allocated annually by the local government to sustain the scholarships of the students.
Former mayor Rodrigo “Digos” Canlas, who was in attendance during the activity, lauded the continuous efforts of Wong to uplift the lives of every Simonian.
He noted the importance of prioritizing the education of youth, from pre-school to college, as it serves as foundation of every person’s success.
“Ito ay edukasyon at kabataan, parehong pinaka-importanteng sangay ng komunidad kaya natutuwa ako na nabibigyan sila magagandang programa,” he said.
He also urged the students to sustain their efforts and finish their studies to provide better future for themselves and their respective families.
He reminded them to look at education as the most precious and invaluable treasure that they can bring anywhere they want to be.
