City of San Fernando Traffic Management Office vows corrective measures

INSTEAD of safety, cyclists passing by the MacArthur Highway in the City of San Fernando on Friday lamented that the new motorcycle and bicycle lane in the area may pose a bigger hazard to their daily travel.

The newly-installed motorcycle and bicycle lane situated in the outermost lane along the portion of MacArthur Highway in Barangay Sindalan to Barangay Telabastagan is a project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

According to Jerry Borja, a government employee who rides his bike to work, the new motorcycle and bike lane may not be ideally safe for both motorcyclists and bikers as the two have different speed displacements.

“Dangerous in a way na ang motor at bike in one lane, the former is very fast. It is a bicycle and motorcycle lane, but we know that whoever has the biggest motor or speed tend to bully the road,” Borja said.

While the special lane is dedicated to two-wheeled vehicles alone, Borja lamented that several cars still uses it as a shortcut, as well as a service road for business establishments and residential areas along the stretch of MacArthur Highway.

He added that the lane is also sometimes used as loading and unloading bay of public utility jeepneys plying the route which defeats the purpose of the lane’s exclusivity for bikers and motorcyclists.

“It is understandable if vehicles will need to pass this lane when entering certain establishments or homes within the coverage of this lane or that jeeps may need to make a quick loading and unloading of passengers as well as delivery vehicles that need to do the same. But the idea is that it should serve its purpose,” he said.

City Traffic Management Office head Danilo Bautista, meanwhile, said that the new road project is yet to be completed and rules and advisories are still for implementation.

“Actually, putol-putol pa iyan, hindi pa nakumpleto ng Public Works but on the part of the San Fernando Traffic Management Office, we will ensure that the project will serve its purpose, which is to ensure the safety of our bikers and riders,” he said.

Bautista also said that he already proposed the separation of motorcycle and bicycle lanes to the DPWH, citing the safety concerns raised by the said bikers.

He added that the strict implementation of rules and regulations on the said lane, particularly the illegal parking of vehicles which has been a problem in the first bicycle lane in Lazatin Boulevard.

“Ang bike lane ay ginawa para sa safety ng ating mga kaibigan na bikers and we will assure na ganoon nga ang mangyayari para maiwasan ang aberya sa ating mga daan,” Bautista said.
