San Fernando launches inter-barangay ‘Gulayan sa Kababaihan’ tilt

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO---The City Government of San Fernando recently launched the inter-barangay “Gulayan sa Kababaihan” contest in line with the celebration of Women’s Month 2018.

The greening competition kicked off with a seminar on crop production and protection conducted by City Agriculture and Veterinary Office Monday at Tierra Linda Building, here participated in by Fernandina groups.

Women’s groups from different barangays of the City of San Fernando will be competing in developing backyard garden to be planted with various vegetable crops that aims to lessen malnutrition among the children.

Local Council of Women Chairperson Dr. Leticia Yap said the activity seeks to encourage every Fernandina to plant organically-grown vegetables towards good health and good nutrition.

This is one of our important activities. By the month of june we will start planting and by September we will know the results. This is where we will get nutritious food for children so they will be enticed to eat vegetables which are very good for their health),” Yap said.

During the seminar, CAVO Agricultural Extension Worker Donalene Megino discussed the proper ways of backyard planting, guidelines and criteria of the said competition.

For his part, Mayor Edwin Santiago stressed the importance of having a community garden where everyone may have access in getting nutritious food since farming is the key to ensure food security for the community.

He also lauded the Fernandinas for engaging themselves in different agricultural programs of the city.

If it’s women who will take on the job, it will surely be successful because every task is in their heart, like the right nutrition for their children),” Santiago added.

Also present during the program were City Councilor and Committee on Agriculture Nelson Lingat, City Agriculture and Veterinary Officer Cristina Sangumay and GAD Focal Person Amalia Catacutan.
