Mendoza: To Arboleda, A psychiatrist Or Fr. Orbos

I DIDN'T have much time to profoundly check on my e-mails when I was in Tokyo last week covering the 41st Tokyo Motor Show.

The Motor Show was so hectic a coverage for me for a whole week that the earliest I could hit the sack was usually midnight.

As usual, I had to spend time at the biennial event that featured the world's latest in vehicle technology (I am also a motoring journalist, in case you have forgotten), although Toyota's fleet, of course, took much of my waking hours. One car that took my fancy was Toyota's Formula One car, which became, definitely, the cynosure of all eyes for its sheer magnificence.

This was my Ninth Tokyo Motor Show since 1993, but every visit seemed like the first. I was hooked to it like a junkie is to coke.

When I saw my e-mails back home, one thing stood out: Wynne Arboleda was suspended the whole season of 2009-2010.

To add to his agony, Arboleda won't receive his salary from Burger King worth P2.73 million while under suspension.

Arboleda drew the fine and suspension for punching and kicking a heckler at courtside during the recent Burger King-Smart Gilas game at the Araneta Coliseum.

In his decision, PBA commissioner Renauld Barrios said, "...even granting that said fan was foul-mouthed and verbally abusive as confirmed by reports to us, there is a 'line' that a PBA player cannot and should not cross: to physically harm a fan. Your serious breach of this 'line' endangers the PBA as being perceived by the public as unwholesome and not deserving of fan support."

He told Arboleda a repetition of the same or a similar act will result in a lifetime ban from the league.

Arboleda is now also banned at any playing venue during a Burger King game and may not play in any other league.

Arboleda seeing his P2.73 million getting flushed down the drain will surely hurt.

But the pain of shame his entire family will have to face - from his wife to his kids - is something not easy to cope with.

For Arboleda, a psychiatrist might help.

Or a healing priest in the mould of Fr.Jerry Orbos, maybe?
