Mercado: Don't bet on it

THERE are two news events lately that may influence climate change in the community. First the bigger news.

I will tell you at the outset that it is not Charter change, which, though possible, is quite remote as a post-menopausal woman giving a virgin birth.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

Neither is it the new lifestyle of Changing Partners among celebrity couples with the terrible consequences in heartbreak and scandal.

I am referring to the announcement of Governor Panlilio in Cabanatuan about the possibility of running for President in 2010.

Nueva Ecija reporters quoted him as saying he would submit himself to God's will and seek the presidency. The Crusaders shouted the same battle cry in "Deus Volt!" in waging genocide among the Muslims.

"Kung ano ang gusto ng Panginoon wala akong magagawa. We are servants of the Lord," he told the newsmen. The Crusaders massacred the infidels as a divine will.

I can explain why Among Ed revealed an epiphany during an unguarded moment in a place outside his province. He does not trust our local media (most of them anyway) who would instantly relay any of his political moves to their Lubao connections.

Our cabalen have been abuzz with rumors of the priest-governor as aspiring for a national office - as senator probably - under a good governance movement. Kaya Natin!

If God will it he could be President, there is no arguing on that. If not, Among Ed can be a senator, you can bet on that.
Auspiciously enough, Panlilio can fill the future vacancy to be left by Senator Lito Lapid whose term end in 2010.

This will be a variation of Changing Partners .Not of women certainly but of positions even as the Porac folk hero has started grooming his white horse for a "llave" event not unlike the "karera" at the Sta. Ana racetrack for a second dividendo.

Among Ed who likes to talk, being used to the pulpit in Minalin town, may then find the time of his life delivering privilege speeches-cum-homilies before the august body. At long last he will wake up each day without a threat of a "kalampagan" by Balas stragglers.

Why, the Gov may fit the Senate position to a "T." And Leon Guerrero will be back to Sherwood Forest. With the outgoing senator as governor, you can rest assure that peace and order will follow, with board members and the next vice governor (assuming Yeng Guiao will not reelect) dancing to the tune of "Happy Days are here again!"

With his revelation of a plan to run for a national office, Among Ed has created a miracle of sorts. His declaration can be the equivalent and has the force of the magic phrase, "Open the Sesame!"

He has given instant hope to the desperate; the deaf could hear, the mute speaks; even the blind (to their faults) can now see their place under the sun (or sands).

Out of gratitude or in appreciation of his wisdom, the Provincial Board should pass a resolution endorsing and expressing support to Among Ed's candidacy to a national position. The Governor's decision was the next thing after a botched Recall Move, and the board members should not waste a single moment in drafting their endorsement of support for Panlilio.

In addition, the Pampanga Mayors League should initiate a similar move in support of the Gov and wish him well for a successful venture in a national election. I suggest Candaba Mayor Jerry Pelayo sponsor the Resolution, and also to present it to Among Ed in the presence of PML officials. Architect Andy Gulapa may serve as his second in the ring or as cut man (no pun intended).

The happiest persons around after Panlilio's masterstroke of a political move are Lubao Mayor Dennis Pineda, Vice Governor Yeng Guiao, and Attorney Ely Velez Pamatong, not necessarily in that order.

Senator Lapid, at times clueless about his opponents and rivals, does not care less. Whether Panlilio runs for reelection or not or if there are other roving bands in Sherwood Forest will not matter when he does his last stunt.

Many have always been rooting for Yeng Guiao in the governorship as he has earned and deserved the right as the legitimate opponent of Panlilio. Like the former vice governors, including the virtuous and hapless Cielo Macapagal-Salgado, Cicero Punzalan, and Clayton Olalia, Yeng seems fated to that position. His best chance was the aborted Recall election which daily appears moving out of reach.

Beyond this uncertain euphoria spawned by Panlilo's pronouncement is the reality of innumerable aspirants who had been reported hearing "voices" and people's clamor. Like Joan of Arc, they waged war after their epiphany, including Attorney Velez Pamatong who must have heard Allah's own prodding when he ran for Pampanga governor

Aside from Mr. Pamatong, Angeles City resident Chito Bacani has tried vying for the Presidency after hearing voices in the dark. "Loko Chito," his beloved mother admonished his obsessive son, "Mangan ka, danup mu 'yan."

I can tell you Among Ed has equal chances of winning the Presidency as my favorite gubernatorial bet, Ely Pamatong in stopping dagdag-bawas by spreading iron spikes at the Comelec.

Panlilio running for President? Don't bet on it, even if your own mother tells you to. Lahat naman tayo ay galing na d'yan, Ang Tanging Ina N'yo Lahat!
