Honoring Women

-A A +A

IT IS often said that women, mothers particularly, are the light of the house and guiding spirit of the family. In most cases, this proves true to the point although there are instances when they ran away and shackle with other men not necessarily their lawfully-wedded husbands. Mind you, these are but isolated cases because in our culture, wives are expectedly devoted to their husbands and children.

The Philippines is one country which honors its women, gives them equal rights as the male population and recognizes their contributions to the economy and patrimony of the country. As we can see, several women have distinguished themselves in different fields of endeavor, especially in politics, such as former Presidents Cory Aquino and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. In other fields, women have excelled and have had their names carved in the nation's history.

In other countries, especially Muslims, women have yet to participate in their governments' affairs, learn to drive and be licensed as drivers and do other things hitherto exclusive to their male counterparts.
Our women are far luckier than their peers in closed societies and locations.

New faces. I have come across tarps announcing the candidacy of new, fresh entrants in the political scene of Mabalacat City: one was a former Pelco II director by the name of Lito Reyes and another is a low-profile engineer, Joe Aguilar, who, from accounts I gathered, is so desirous to prove his mettle at the Sangguniang Panlungsod and he comports himself as a good choice for the city's forthcoming infra projects. Atty. Geld P. Aquino is also a good prospect for the SP and will contribute his legal experience, youth and enthusiasm to the city's legislative body. Another one is Stephen Aurelio who would go the mold of last termer councilor and now board member aspirant Dr. Oscar Aurelio by way of sponsoring sensible legislative matters. It is about time the city's Sangguniang Panlungsod was habited by young, energetic and vision-filled members who will enact relevant and sensible ordinances and resolutions.
