Be a Hero-A A +A

YOU can be a hero. You don't need to be shot in Luneta. You don't need to rise in arms against foreign invaders. You don’t need to be a "Tony Manaloto" and build numerous hands for the poor. You don’t need to teach street kids like "Efren Peñaflorida". You can be a hero right in your doorstep.
For a start, clean your yard. Clean your front view. "Tapat ko, Linis ko". If you clean your premises, your neighbors will follow the lead. Paul Flores is an example of a person who cares. Without fanfare, Paul sweeps everyday, 24 hours a week. Paul provides a face for "Tapat ko, Linis Ko" programs. He keeps on mounting a crusade against garbage.
"May Pera sa Basura". There is money in recycling. I have mixed feelings about "Mangangalakal and Magbobotes". Poor children are looking in garbage bins for used newspapers, bottles, plastics. This is a sad reality. Junk shops earn by buying and selling garbage. We find the example of an enterprising native of Mexico, Pampanga in converting corn hubs into bags as worth emulating.
"Likas na Yaman, Pangalagaan para Mapanatili ang Kaunlaran". The San Fernando River is here and it is here to stay. It is a natural resource which we should nourish. If fish can thrive in its waters, Fernandinos can take pride. We keep on constructing artificial lakes and ponds, here is a river designed by nature. All that is needed is – don’t throw your garbage. Let us care for God given riches.
Way back in my elementary grades, we had a slogan that sticks. "Cleanliness is next to Godliness". If your workplace is clean, God is with you. If you have a clean house, you feel good and light. Your disposition is positive. Pick small litter (candy wrappers, etc.) where you see them.
If you pick up a fight, fight for Mother Nature. Adopt trees when needed. I remember a friend, Mr. Melchor Baysa. He used to rent a house abutting ours.
He planted several trees in St. Jude. Among them is an avocado tree which bears big fruits every season up to now. My friend returned to Naga (Bicol) after the lahar onslaught but the trees he planted are lasting legacies. He fought for nature for which we should uphold.
Heroism does not only mean dying for principles. It also means you make your place – cleaner and greener.
Be a hero.
