CLAYTON A. Olalia at age 15 already achieved an enviable status. He was chairman of the Kabataang Barangay (KB) of Barangay Sta. Lucia when San Fernando was yet the capitol town, and not the progressive that it is today. Thanks to the former mayors.

He was subsequently elected president of the KB federation of the town, thus earned him a seat as member of the town council, with then Mayor Armando Biliwang at the helm. He was one of the youngest members of the provincial board of Pampanga in the seventies, serving till 1998 with few years of interruptions.

Running in tandem with Governor Lito Lapid,he won the vice governorship against Yeng Guiao in 1998. He was eyeing a re-election when then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo requested him to give way to her son Mikey. The next year he was appointed deputy director of Manila Economic Cooperation Office (MECO) based in Taipei, Taiwan.

He had a short stint at MECO and was re-assigned as Assistant Secretary of the Deparment of Agriculture when Domingo Panganiban was the secretary. Panganiban was so suspicious of him, nary he gave him assignment. He was sent to provinces instead and read Panganiban's speeches when the latter was busy with other engagements.

He was overjoyed when Panganiban was given the pink slip by the palace, and the latter was relieved by Arthur Yap, a student of the president in her economic class at the Ateneo De Manila University. He had a good relationship with Yap, and was given challenging assignments. He was sent to several missions abroad, and that further widened his horizon. He was Secretary Yap's hatchet man. Did public relations for him. Assisted him in his press conferences. Handled the monitoring of any news, bad or good, from all media sources. It was an ideal partnership and one of the highlights in his government career.

Clayton is a cross-functional person. He is now in farming and in business of high end car importation and at the same time do bit roles in movies. Even when he was yet a member of the provincial board, he played as Lito Lapid's sidekick in several movies which the latter produced and starred in.

He vividly remembered his role in Geron Olivar which starred Lapid and Kris Aquino. The kissing scene there got him. I asked him if he never dreamt of getting a lead role in a movie. His good looks wasn't enough. He was overweight. He was motivated to lose weight even went to surgery hoping to sculpt his body in the mold of Lapid or Richard Gomez.

“Except for John Goodman and few other heavy in weights cannot hope to get the lead role in a movie,” he said.

*****

His movie career is far from over. He is still get some call slips from film and television networks, but mostly not too noticeable roles, but nonetheless get emoluments for coffee money.

Will he ever get back to politics. He said yes, “when opportunity knocks.” Will he ever get to meat processing business where his family made their fortune till their Pampanga Pride factory was covered by lahar during the Mt. Pinatubo eruption, he said no.

Clayton is now in his fifties, but said 'time cannot intimidate me'. As of the moment he just love to hang around with movie glamour boys and booze once in a while as a reward to their hardworks. So if you are looking for him, he is either in a movie set or jamming with the glamour boys in some high class watering holes.
