The City Solid Waste Management Office-A A +A
At Close Range
Sunday, March 30, 2014
THE head of Mabalacat City Solid Waste Management Office, Jeffrey
"Jinky" Santos was accommodating enough to furnish me data for this
week's column. Here are his inputs on the city's garbage disposal
The City Government of Mabalacat entered into an agreement with
Holcim (a cement factory) for its Geocycle Co-processing technology,
wherein waste materials are being sorted out from wastes that are
supposed to be hauled to a sanitary landfill for disposal. Thus, after
being sorted out, only a little percentage of residual wastes are left
for disposal, thereby minimizing the volume and cost of disposal
of these residual wastes to sanitary landfill in Kalangitan, Capas.
The City of Mabalacat wishes to institute a number of changes and
improvements to its solid waste management practices. In addition to
the physical changes, the LGU plans to improve the organizational
structure within the City and utilize these and other units to work in an
integrated and coordinated manner. The primary consideration is to
improve community education on waste reduction, waste recycling
and resource conservation and the more general improvement issues
associated with ecological waste management.
The local government unit is primarily responsible in implementing
the Solid Waste Management Plan (SWM). Its goal is to expand
its activities in waste segregation, training, composting and proper
disposal and in line with this, is the implementation of RA 9003,
which is the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
With the accompanying IRR DENR Administrative Order No.
2001-34 ensures the protection of public health and environment.
