Pangan: Post mortem
Thursday, October 28, 2010 - 11:34 p.m.SO, THE electoral exercises have gone full circle for 2010: national and local elections in May and the recently-concluded barangay and SK elections in October. After these expensive exercises, what? Quo vadis?
We are adherents to constitutional mandates and issuances. Except for non fatal and occasional misses and lapses, we have carried out probably the most extensive and expensive activities to prove our democracy and the institutions it represents. So we have new sets of barangay and SK officials. So what?

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 - 09:37 p.m.I BUMPED into Marni Castro, the engineer, two days ago, an event that is becoming as rare as the floods that used to haunt Fernandinos. As in most cases, he was in the company of some significant people from the public works department. Times like that, you knew he was in for another worthy assignment in engineering intervention.

Speak Out: Opportunities make us stronger
Tuesday, October 26, 2010 - 09:32 p.m.IN OUR years of teaching elementary pupils, we have already been in situations which measure not only our caliber in handling lessons but also in coping up with problems that almost led our coolness into steaming hot potatoes. Anyway, that is the spice of teaching, jumping up over hurdles while filling up the bucket of youngsters into something that they cannot forget through the course of their life.

Pangan: Something sensible, this time
Monday, October 25, 2010 - 12:14 a.m.JUST when every Senate observer was teasing about Senator Manuel "Lito" M. Lapid's non-appearance on Senate deliberations and interpellations and instead spending most of his time on the lounge, the honorable gentleman from Porac has this time surprised his more prominent and articulate colleagues with his more sensible, doable and pragmatic bills. No frills, no retouches, just plain common sense from Leon Guerrero: doing away with every bag for school children and mandatory support to parents from grown-up children.

Sula: PNoy and the poor
Thursday, October 21, 2010 - 10:41 p.m.PNOY’S eye-popping conditional cash transfer can be viewed analytically in two ways: it reveals his heart and mind about the plight of the poor as well as his insight and foresight about the economy. It is “halo” politics blending with free-lunch economics.
Peña: Changes
Thursday, October 21, 2010 - 10:39 p.m.TIMES are changing. Consider election campaigns. Last 2007, tarpaulin posters are a luxury. Only the moneyed candidates can afford them.
