PamCham to join Earth Hour 2010

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PamCham) President Rene Romero said Friday that members of the business chamber will participate in this year’s Earth Hour observation.
Romero said the move is in accordance with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (PCCI) call to all provincial chambers to participate and draft their own programs in celebrating the event.

On Saturday night of March 21, when the clock strikes 8:30 p.m., the world will once more be engulfed in darkness in a bid to encourage a billion people in the country and the world to celebrate the biggest party in favor of positive environmental solutions.
Romero said the Earth Hour, now in its third year in the country, is envisioned as a celebration of climate change solutions.
“The Philippines aim to inspire 15 million Filipinos in 1,000 towns, cities and municipalities to switch off and join in the revelry,” Romero said, stressing that they invite member business of PamCham to draft their own system of celebrating the event based on the traditional switching of power switches.
“People in the business sector play a crucial role in the propagation of environmental consciousness among the employees and clients. Being in the business sector gives us the edge to efficiently implement similar environmental campaigns,” Romero said.
Many of the nation’s most iconic landmarks are expected to dim their lights in the largest call for action on climate change. Cities from around the world, from Europe to Africa, are expected to join in.
One of the highlights of the event is the expression of the commitment from partners to support the Earth Hour 2010, which will be held on March 27.
Earth Hour is a global event organized by World Wide Fund that involves the voluntarily turning off of non-essential lights for an hour to heighten awareness about the effects of climate change.
The Department of Energy, along with partner agencies such as the Green Army and the Switch Movement, are spearheading the event in the country. (IOF)
