Quarrying blamed for Taug Dike breaching

ANGELES CITY -- Pinoy Gumising Ka Movement (PGKM) leader has blamed quarry operators for the breaching of the Taug Dike, which serves as this city's shield against floodwaters.

PGKM head Ruperto Cruz said the present quarry operations at Barangay Manuali in nearby Porac town and Barangay Cuayan caused the destruction on the structure.

Cruz said the National and the City Government should stop the quarry operation in said areas to save the dike.

He even expressed suspicion that the quarry operators operate without clearances from Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and other concerned agencies.

"I don't think the DENR will allow quarry operations at the upper portion or near a structure like the Taug Dike," he said.

He said a giant quarry operator from Porac town operates at the Manuali area.

He also alleged that some leaders in a village situated near the dike are involved in the illegal quarrying near the dike.

"I received information that some barangay officials near the dike are involved in the illegal quarrying," Cruz said.

He failed to name the barangay and its leaders allegedly engaged in quarry operations but said they have no rights to complain about the dike's breaching.

"Why are they complaining when they are also part of the cause of the dike's destruction," Cruz said.

Cuayan barangay head Arthur Candelaria earlier appealed to City Officials to repair the breached portion, saying many villages in the city are endangered if the dike spills during heavy rains.

Cruz said massive quarry operations at the Manuali area and near the dike will cause further damage on the structure's integrity.
