San Agustin is Mayor Oca Inter-barangay champ


CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Barangay San Agustin Basketball Team is this year's 4th Mayor Oca Inter-barangay Basketball Tournament as it was able to nail down Barangay Maimpis in a championship game that ended at a score of 97-84 at the University of the Assumption Gymnasium recently.

The sticky defensive play enabled Barangay San Agustin to cart away the championship crown. Power forwards Ralph Lising and Philip Alvarez, who both earned four-shot blocks, forced Barangay Maimpis team to create desperate turnovers in the game.

The crowd went wild when Joselito Bucad of Barangay San Agustin unleashed two consecutive three-point shots which completed the 11 to nothing run at 65-50 in favor of his team in the third quarter. While player Jeff Bucad, also of Barangay San Agustin, was able to yield 38 points, some 16 points of which were made in the third quarter resulting to a sure victory for the team.

Philip Alvarez was named Most Valuable Player and was included in the Mythical Five as Best Forward with Best Guards Richard Bondoc (Maimpis) and Emmanuel Gutierrez (Lourdes); Best Centers Jamelee Sebastian (Maimpis); and Best Forward Ralph Lising (San Agustin). Coach Buddy Ortega of Barangay San Agustin was named Best Coach.

Barangay San Agustin won P30,000 and a trophy as championship prizes while P20,000 went to Barangay Maimpis which placed 1st runner-up. Barangay Lourdes, which placed 3rd runner-up, went home with P10,000 and P5,000 for Barangay Del Pilar who was 3rd runner-up.

According to Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, the tournament will continue to be yearly activity that brings barangays together in healthy competitive games.

"We will come up with more sporting events like this to encourage our people to get into sports to avoid vices and promote good heath," he said. (IOF)
