2 fishermen hurt in dynamite fishing


LINGAYEN -- Two fishermen were injured when one of the homemade dynamites they were using for fishing exploded here last Saturday.

Municipal Police Chief Harris Fama identified the fishermen as Zaldy Salva, 40, and Virgilio Castro, 39, both of Barangay Capandanan, Lingayen.

“The incident must serve as final warning to all fishermen who are using dynamites or other improvised devise to totally stop their illegal activities,” Fama said.

A concerned citizen called up at Lingayen Police Station and reported that two fishermen engaged in dynamite fishing were rushed to the Nazarene Hospital here.

Salva, during the investigation, admitted that he was about to throw the dynamite into the water when it suddenly blasted.

The explosion severed his right hand, causing his fingers to be amputated. Castro, on the other hand, sustained several injuries in the body.

Fama said he will endorse to Mayor Ernesto Castaneda the deputization of selected fishermen as fish wardens to enforce fishing laws and monitor the sea.

Castaneda earlier ordered an all-out campaign on illegal fishing at the Lingayen Gulf. He likewise directed the Lingayen police to crack down on the suppliers of dynamites in the town. (LCMY/Sunnex)
