Broadcaster's kin gunned down

DAGUPAN CITY -- The daughter of a local broadcaster was shot dead Thursday morning while she was walking home from work.

Zharlene Yadao, 26 years old, a registered nurse of Barangay Tambac here, succumbed to the lone gunshot she received from an unidentified gunman.

Published in the Sun.Star Baguio newspaper on July 3, 2009.

She was the daughter of Susan Yadao, who is a reporter for Aksyon Radyo Pangasinan.

There were reports about death threats Zharlene received through text messages days before the incident.

Dr. Benjamin Bautista, the doctor from the city health office who conducted the autopsy, said the slug from a .38-caliber revolver entered the left shoulder of Zharlene and passed through the upper lobe of her left lung to her right lung, liver, and right kidney where the slug was recovered.

He said the victim could have been hit first in the head by the triggerman as manifested by a one-centimeter cut.

Bautista added that since the victim was 4'10" in height, she could have ducked before she was shot. "The nozzle of the gun could have been less than one meter away from her shoulder."

Susan disclosed that the duty of her daughter at the Dagupan Doctors Medical Centrum located at the highway in Barangay Tambac was from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.

From the highway, she usually walks home as it is just several meters away.

Dagupan City Police Chief Mariano Luis Verzosa said the Police Community Precinct in Barangay Bolosan received about 4:50 a.m. a report from a concerned citizen, 10 minutes after the gunshot was heard.

Initial investigation showed that the security guard at the nearby Dagupan City Water District noticed earlier a Honda TMX 155 motorcycle with two persons riding in tandem. He noticed the motorcycle passed by and came back not long after the gunshot was heard.

The investigators said only the decoration of her cellular phone was found at the crime scene.

Meanwhile, the victim's family deplored the manner with which the policemen, who first responded, treated the victim.

Instead of rushing her to the hospital, one investigator called up instead a funeral parlor from Calasiao that arrived several minutes later.

Verzosa said he created a special investigating team for the immediate solution of the case. The police investigation officer was taken out from the case and will also be subject to a probe.
