SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union -- Students and employees from the local and private sectors will have access to research and be equipped with relevant and latest information as the Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Station (Starbooks), the first Philippine science digital library of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), is now available in the Ilocos region.

Paulina P. Nebrida of DOST-Ilocos Region said the Starbooks is a stand-alone onsite research kiosk located at their office that provides free science and technology (S&T) information for academic and livelihood use even without internet connection.

“Users can have access to the scientific information sourced-out from local and foreign linkages, subscription, archive collections, and in-house publications contained at the DOST’s Science Information Network,” Nebrida said.

Nebrida added that Starbooks offers efficient and effective access to relevant S & T information on food and nutrition, health and medicine, emerging technologies, energy, environment, appropriate livelihood technologies, investigatory projects and theses in different fields that exist in the country.

Nebrida said that the Starbooks also have “Tamang DOSTkarte Livelihood Videos” to support and promote the Filipinos’ entrepreneurial spirit.

“Starbooks must lead in progress since, S&T information is a vital resource in socio-economic development. Generation of new technologies or innovations becomes possible and new S&T-based enterprises are established with the use of S&T information as well,” Nebrida said.

To serve more clients, Nebrida said the Starbooks will also be installed at the Provincial Science and Technology Centers in Batac, Ilocos Norte and Vigan, Ilocos Sur; government center in the city of San Fernando, La Union; Pangasinan State University in Urdaneta City and Lingayen Pangasinan.
