ILOCOS Police Regional Office Director Ricardo Marquez led on Monday the turnover of 538 new handguns along with the Provincial Police Office (PPO) directors at Camp BGen Oscar M. Florendo.
Chief Superintendent Marquez said the turnover is part of the continuing distribution of new Philippine National Police (PNP) standard gun -- the Generation 4 Glock 17 9mm pistol.
About 777 guns are also expected to be distributed in the region soon, Marquez added.
Of the 538 distributed pistols, 155 were given to Pangasinan police, 119 to La Union, 125 to Ilocos Sur, and 139 to Ilocos Norte.
He said that the pistols will be a big boost to the capability of the Ilocos police, especially those who patrol the streets.
“It is important that our patrollers get the proper equipment, particularly a gun, but it is more important that the members have the proper skills, attitude and disposition,” he said.
Before a police be issued the standard gun, he or she must first pass the different phases of fundamental marksmanship and firearm handling courses. (PNA)
