Search on for cleanest river-A A +A
Wednesday, April 2, 2014
LINGAYEN -- The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (Opag) has announced a province-wide search for the “Cleanest River and Riverbank” in 47 towns and cities in Pangasinan.
The search, also known as "Pakar Awards 2014," forms part of the "Pistay Dayat" (Sea Festival) celebration. The competition was first launched in 2009.
The search seeks to recognize the efforts of the local government units (LGUs) in protecting, managing, and preserving the river systems in Pangasinan, said Provincial Agriculturist Dalisay Moya.
Competing river and riverbank entries of LGUs are those outside the project sites of the “Ilog Ko, Bilayen tan Aroen Ko” (My River, I will Make it Live and Love It) environmental program of the provincial government, Moya added.
The awarding rites of Pakar awards to winning LGUs is usually held in the first day of May, the peak of Pistay Dayat merriment, at the Banaga bridge area in Bugallon town right after the fluvial parade dubbed “Banca Parada.”
"Pakar" is a kind of mangrove specie teeming in rivers near coastal waters of Pangasinan which not only serves as good shelter of fishes, but also helps stabilize banks of fishponds and rivers due to its spreading roots. (PNA)
