Noynoy, Mar on nuclear power plant

DAGUPAN CITY -- Liberal Party presidential candidate Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III and his vice presidential running mate Mar Roxas have opposing stand on the nuclear power generation issue.

If Aquino is against it, Roxas is open to the idea.

But Roxas said an independent commission (composed of expert scientists, physicists, nuclear scientists) should be formed to study it and that no politician should be appointed as member of it.

“Bukas ang aking kaisipan (sa nuclear power plant), pag-aralan natin ito. It's the cheapest form of power. Nakikita nating ang ating mga kapitbahay ay bukas sila sa nuclear power. Dapat malawak ang ating pagtingin dito, pag-aralan natin ito,” he said in a press conference here recently.

“Bakit ang mga ibang bansa ay may kumpyansa sa nuclear power? Ang China, 30 yata ang ipapatayong nuclear power plant sa loob ng susunod na dekada. Yung Korea, Taiwan, yung bansang Hapon atbp umaasa sila sa nuclear power para sa kanilang pangangailangan. Para sa akin, dapat maging bukas tayo at siguraduhin natin na alam natin ang pinapasukan natin, siguraduhin natin na ligtas ito. Hindi puwede dito yong Pilipino-style na bahala, okey na yan dahil kapag nagka-nuclear accident, malaki ang pinsala at daang-libo ang apektado,” he added.

Roxas said the issue about the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant should be separated from that of a new nuclear power plant.

Pangasinan's fifth district Representative Mark Cojuangco has been passionately campaigning and promoting for the use of nuclear power plant as an alternative energy generation system amidst the problem of electricity now and in the future.

Incidentally, the Provincial Board of Pangasinan has passed a resolution expressing its willingness to host a nuclear power plant. (LCMY/Sunnex)
