Aside from editing the publication of the San Carlos Seminary College, Lorenzo “Insoy” P. Niñal also contributed “Crossline” essays to Sun.Star Cebu’s Weekend Saturday Magazine.

Finally choosing the pen over the pulpit, he quit theology studies and became a Sun.Star reporter in January 1999.

The year 2003 saw Insoy editing “Light,” a faith-based section published on Sundays.

In July 2007, his “Scrambled Egg” column in Weekend Saturday Magazine was renamed “Insoymada” and moved to the opinion-editorial section.
Aside from being one of Sun.Star Cebu’s page editors, Insoy guides Tsinelas, an organization he founded to help children attain an education.

Niñal: Windmills

Monday, May 01, 2017

AN argument over windmills almost spoiled our visit to Ilocos Norte last week.

ME: They should call it wind turbines, not windmills.

WIFE: It’s the same.

ME: No, it should not be the same.

WIFE: So you’re fixated with Don Quixote hahaha.

ME: I’m not romanticizing windmills, if that’s what you’re trying to say.

WIFE: I didn’t say that.

ME: A mill is a device that breaks solid materials, like corn, into smaller pieces by grinding.

WIFE: That’s old-school windmill.

ME: Tilting at windmills…

Niñal: Dick Astley

Monday, March 27, 2017

THE only purpose showbiz celebrities have in our lives I think is to make us feel sorry we’re not celebrities ourselves. This explains the sadness we feel every time we finish watching a movie.

It’s not our return to the real world that makes us sad. It’s not the pile of laundry that needs washing back home. What makes us feel low is the realization that we’re not hot like Robert Pattinson, Colton Haynes or Liam Hemsworth, none of whom I’m familiar with because I just copy-pasted their names from some website’s “Top Ten Hottest Actors Under 30” to make me sound millennial.

Niñal: Supersonic dad

Monday, March 13, 2017

I READ the warning on my news feed a little too late. I only found what the whole thing was about when I logged on later that day. So when I heard the noise, I was sure my time had come.

I said my prayers, thanked God for my life here on earth and asked Him to receive me and my kids into His loving arms in heaven.

This is what happened. I was walking home with my two boys after fetching them from school last week. They were telling me how school went, who bullied them, who they bullied, and if one plus one was still two like yesterday.

Niñal: Defending Jim

Tuesday, February 28, 2017

I THINK the backlash to the incident between Jim Paredes and some young supporters of President Rodrigo Duterte at Edsa last Saturday is unfair to the songwriter. Paredes has every right to say what he wants to say in public, including telling Duterte supporters the potent “doo-bi-doo” right to their face.

Niñal: Ugly people, unite

Tuesday, February 21, 2017

WHAT do you do when you don’t have a girlfriend because you’re not Brad Pitt? 1) Curse your parents for the ugly genes 2) Save money for cosmetic surgery 3) Organize a group that promotes the rights of ugly people.

The first answer is anti-family, unfair to your parents who believe you’re the most beautiful monkey in the world. The second is expensive and vain, not to mention unfair again to your parents because it’s confirming they have monkey genes.
