Dubya hints Gloria will get US support

MANILA -- In what amounted to endorsing her 2004 reelection bid, US President George W. Bush took pains to praise President Arroyo during a brief joint public appearance as the two met at Malacañang.

"I want to remind the people of this country what a great leader you've been when it comes to fighting terror. You've been strong and stalwart, and that's what's needed," he said. "We want to continue to help you." full story

7 solons walk out on Dubya

MANILA -- Thousands of anti-US protesters demonstrated and burned US flags while five leftist legislators walked out when US President George W. Bush gave a speech before a joint session of Congress Saturday.

They celebrated the impressive gains in US-RP relations made under their administration and in the statement issued shortly after their 30-minute conference in Malacañang said the state visit of the US president marks another concrete step forward in the development of a modern, mature relationship between friends and equals. full story

Anti-US protest

MANILA -- Amid protests and threats of extremist attacks, tightened security was evident even before Bush touched down in Villamor Air Base: two F-15 fighter jets escorted Air Force One through Philippine airspace until moments before landing.

President Arroyo had deployed over 11,000 police and soldiers in Manila amid warnings from Abu Sayyaf that it would mark Bush's visit with violence. full story

Mikaela steals show at Bush welcome rites

MANILA -- Presidential granddaughter Mikaela Gloria Arroyo stole the show Saturday during the welcome ceremony at Malacanang for visiting United States President George W. Bush.

Mikaela was among the elementary schoolchildren waving Philippine and American flags and cheering President and Mrs. Bush when President Arroyo took the opportunity to introduce her granddaughter to the American leader. full story
