THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) will investigate an irregularity in the number of voters in the province of Maguindanao where administration candidates made a clean sweep in the senatorial race.
“This is the first time I’ve heard of this so we will have to look at it,” said Comelec Commissioner Rene Sarmiento.National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) provincial chairman Hadj Abdullah Dalidig said last Monday’s elections in Maguindanao was marred by cheating as he noted the huge increase in the number of voters.
From 275,572 registered voters in 2004, the number of voters in this year’s elections went up by more than 43 percent or to 396,772.
Commissioner Florentino Tuason said it is premature to declare that the number of voters in Maguindanao had been bloated “unless we see the documents.”
He vowed to scrutinize the certificate of canvass (COC) from the province of Maguindanao once it is received by the national board of canvassers (NBOC) at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) where the canvassing of votes for senators is being held.
Based on the vote tally from the province, not a single candidate of the Genuine Opposition (GO) made it to the Magic 12 and got a low number of votes in the 27 towns of Maguindanao.(Sunnex)
