Joyous end to Beijing’s Olympic debut

By admin | August 25, 2008 | 8:31 am

BEIJING — Heavenly drums, silver bell dancers, light wheels and flying men took center stage to greet guests at the National Stadium Sunday, August 24, for the closing celebration of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The evening’s performances featured an eclectic mix of China’s ethnic minority cultures and various modern elements.

A pyrotechnic display of numbers for the countdown from 29 — to indicate the 29th Olympiad — ushered in the Closing Ceremony at 8:00 p.m. (UTC/GMT +8) with an audience of more than 90,000 present. Spectacular fireworks formed a circle — the Chinese symbol of harmony and renewal — above the stadium immediately afterwards to indicate the successful completion of the Games.

A touching moment during the evening celebration came when 12 representatives of Olympic volunteers received recognition for the work that they and over a million others like them had done to help athletes, officials, reporters, spectators and visitors during the Games in Beijing and the six co-host cities. The volunteers were presented with flowers by the newest elected members of the IOC’s Athletes’ Commission.

Unraveling

SIMPLY put, Team RP went out with a resounding ppppffffttt.

The first round defeat of Mary Antoinette Rivero, the last athlete standing for our nation sealed the deal, as she mirrored the same fate of other athletes like Tshomlee Go, Sheila Mae Perez, and Miguel Molina.

Manny Pacquiao’s wide grin during his proud march at the Opening Ceremonies might as well have been the apex of our Olympic performance.  (more)

BEIJING - The United States won the gold medal in Olympic men’s basketball Sunday with a 118-107 victory over Spain.

Culminating a three-year mission to end years of embarrassment, the U.S. Olympic team survived a huge challenge from Spain, winning 118-107 Sunday in the gold-medal game.

After overwhelming everyone for seven games, the Americans led by only four points with under 2 1/2 minutes to play, then proved they could handle the close game that seemed would never come in Beijing.

Stars of song and sport to highlight Beijing closing ceremony

BEIJING - England football star David Beckham, a Spanish tenor and a throng of kung-fu fighters are among the scheduled closing-ceremony attractions Sunday as China concludes its first Olympics and hands over the role of the Summer Games to London.

Fireworks are planned at 18 locations across the vast city, and a packed house of more than 90,000 will be on hand in the National Outdoor Stadium for the ceremony itself.

Its creators have promised a more lighthearted show than the opening ceremony Aug. 8, which focused heavily on Chinese history.

Gov’t blames athletes for dismal Olympics

By admin | August 24, 2008 | 8:28 am

WASHING its hands off claims that poor preparations led to the country’s dismal showing in the Beijing Olympics, Malacañang on Saturday put the blame on the athletes themselves.

Deputy presidential spokesman Anthony Golez Jr. said the athletes could have done better had they started training at a younger age.

“If you are blaming us for our showing in the Olympics, it’s like if Manny Pacquiao loses, you blame the coach. The important thing is for athletes to develop at a young age. Swimming champ Michael Phelps started training at eight years old. Can we say the same for our athletes?” he said. (more)

RP earns token gold in wushu

By admin | August 24, 2008 | 8:27 am

THE Philippines finally bag a gold medal in the Beijing Olympics. Too bad it won’t count.

Gmanews.tv reported that Willy Wang won a gold in wushu but since the sport is just a demonstration event in the Beijing Olympics, his medal won’t change the three “zeroes” next to the Philippines in the medal tally and the Games’ official website doesn’t even have news or results of the event.

Arianne Cerdena also won a gold in bowling in the 1988 Seoul Olympics but just like Wushu, it was a demonstration event then and didn’t count.  (more)

US to redeem basketball glory in Beijing

By admin | August 24, 2008 | 1:01 am

BEIJING — The United States Basketball “Redeem Team” will try and restore the title it lost in 2004 Athens Olympics on a gold match against Spain on Sunday.

This match will begin after Lithuania and defending Olympic champion Argentina fight for the bronze at 12 p.m. Sunday.

At 2:30 p.m. the game that the US Men’s Basketball team has been waiting for over the past four years will finally tip-off. All results from this tournament so far would indicate that Team USA is a lock for their golden redemption over Spain. So far the United States has won every game by at least 20 points, including a 37-point victory over Spain in their group B clash on August 16.
