12th winning senatorial bet to be proclaimed Friday

THE neck-to-neck battle between two reelectionist senators for the 12th slot would soon be over as the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said they will proclaim the winner on Friday.

Comelec Commissioner Resurreccion Borra said the Comelec members, sitting as National Board of Canvassers (NBOC), decided Wednesday to suspend the canvassing until Friday as the Certificate of Canvass (COC) from Cotabato City would arrive that day yet.

"If the COC will arrive by Friday, the canvassing will take place at 3 p.m. and in the evening, proclamation can probably take place," Borra said.

Borra said the commission decided to continue the canvassing of the remaining COC from Cotabato to the Comelec main office in Intramuros, Manila.

Results of partial and official canvassing by the Comelec showed that Sen. Rodolfo Biazon is still at 12th place with 10,619,964 votes while trailing him at 13th place is Sen. Robert Barbers with 10,580,221. Based on the figures, Biazon's margin over Barbers is only or 39,743 votes.

Cotabato City has 121,000 registered voters. If Barbers scored highest in the province, he would likely succeed in overthrowing Biazon from the 12th place.

The Comelec also temporarily deferred the canvassing of votes for party-list groups as the NBOC still has to resolve discrepancies in the COC and Statement of Votes (SOVs) in the provinces of Maguindanao and Basilan.
