Compostela high school wins top plum in Sinulog-based
tilt By Aledel Gonzalez-Cuizon FLUID
movements, varied elements in their dance and massive props gave Compostela National
High School the top prize in the Sinulog-based category in Sunday's grand parade. The
school, which won first prize in the Sinulog sa Kabataan the other weekend, also
won an award for best costume. An upbeat
tempo, various body movements and a graceful small boy in the lead also made Lumad
Basakanon from Barangay Basak San Nicolas, Cebu City the grand prize winner in
the free interpretation category. Larry
Gabao, chairman of the board of judges, noted a variety of concepts
introduced in Sundays presentations. He
credited this to the participation of the choreographers in the workshop held
last year. Defending champion Tribu Sinanduloy
from Tangub City ranked second in the Sinulog-based category. Colawin
National High School, Dalaguete National High School and Banilad Elementary School
ranked third, fourth and fifth place, respectively. Coverage Gabao
said that the performance of Compostela National High School showed their training
in the lines and formations. The dancers were also able to project their message
well. They covered the area well,
he said, adding that the crowds impression of the set also counted. Gabao
admitted that the board of judges had a hard time deciding in the free interpretation
category because some winning contingents went beyond the time limit. Various
dance elements and good projection were what the judges saw in Tribu Basakanon,
which also won a special award for musicality, a category introduced this year. He
said that the judges saw the performance of the little boy in the front row, which
added to the overall impact. Encore
today Gabao said Pintaflores of San
Carlos City, Negros Occidental was visually beautiful but could use
improvements in the use of space and the direction of some dancers. The
contingent from Mambajao, Camiguin garnered second place, while Don Sergio Osmeña
Memorial National High School got third place. Pintaflores,
San Carlos City of Negros Occidental won fourth place and the award for best in
costume, while Tribu Kandaya of Daanbantayan got fifth place. The
winning contingents will perform again in the awarding ceremony this afternoon
at the Cebu City Sports Center. Photo
