Cebuanos worldwide condole with Yongcos
FROM the different parts of the United
States, Canada, Australia, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia,
The Netherlands, Switzerland and Ireland. They all paid tribute
to the life, and death, of young Cebu lawyer Arbet Sta. Ana-Yongco.
Cebuanos from around the world gave
their testimonials in an online memorial on Yongco, killed by an
assassin exactly a week ago. Word spread quickly throughout the
interconnected world of Cebus loss.
Over a hundred posted their testimonials
in English, in Cebuano or in Tagalog in less than a day from the
time of her killing. More continue to pour in. (To visit the Arbet
Sta. Ana-Yong Memorial, go to www.sunstar.com.ph/yongco) They said:
Justice may be lost most of the time
but there were people like you who stood against all odds, never
lost hope and trust in the justice system. They killed you today
but our hope will be shining through you tomorrow. My family and
I salute you, maam. Farewell. (Doctors without Borders, Voz39zam@yahoo.com)
In behalf of the OFW Cebuanos, I send
our condolences to the family of Atty. Yongco. I hope her death
will prod our government to create a more secure and safe place
to live in. I think security in our country is the biggest problem.
(Geff Rubi, geffrubi@yahoo.com)
I'm just wondering, whats happening
to our beloved Cebu these days? Are we not safe there anymore? I
just hope the suspects will be jailed immediately. (Feil Rosales
of Memphis, Tennessee, felicisi10@aol.com)
The killing of Atty. Yongco is the
devils act. What a Catholic nation with so many violence?
(Arlene from Zürich, Switzerland, lynar61@yahoo.com)
The merciless killing of Atty. Yongco
is a manifestation of the lawlessness and rampant criminality in
the Philippines. I challenge concerned government authorities up
there for the speedy and no-nonsense investigation of her murder.
(Ricardo Nathaniel Odillober of New South Wales, Australia, bam_rebs@yahoo.com.au)
The death of Yongco saddened me. Putting
myself in her shoes, as a mother, I shivered and I cried when I
thought of her leaving a husband and children. (Janet of Jakarta,
Indonesia, jnet@everyoung.co.id)
These messages and the many more in
the online memorial speak of how one killing in Cebu City can reverberate
around the world among people bonded by their roots, their love
for life, their respect for justice and in awe of a simple lawyers
life well-served.
