Local drivers' group mulls P.50 fare hike By Christine Mae Pelayo
THE militant United Negros Drivers and Operators Center (Undoc) is considering a 50-centavo to a peso increase in fare in the wake of the series of oil price increases this year.
"There is a possibility for a fare rate increase if there will be no roll back in oil prices, said Jessie Ortega, Undoc secretary-general.
Last week, oil firms announced a 39-centavo increase, the seventh since March this year.
The so-called "Big Three", namely, Caltex Philippines, Pilipinas Shell and Petron Corp., were the first to raise oil prices.
Ortega said the transport group's call on the national government for a roll back in oil prices fell on deaf ears.
"Our call has been useless. If they still won't listen to us, we don't have a choice but to seek a fare rate increase," he said.
Ortega said Undoc, together with the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan-Negros, plans to hold a rally to dramatize their protest to the government's laxity over the continuing oil price increase.
In Iloilo City, the Pinagkaisahang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide (Piston)-Panay also plans to hold a transport strike and file a petition for fare increase in order to recover drivers' and operators' losses from the continuing oil price hike.
Ortega said Undoc is waiting for the move of the Piston-Manila on the proposed fare increase. |
