Silay men, USLS Team A bag Nova inter-club crowns By Guillermo C. Tejida III
SILAY spikers inked history anew as they secured their Class B Men's title against neophyte squad United Coconut Planter's Bank Saturday in the just concluded 3rd Nova-NOCSF Inter-Club Championships at the University of St. La Salle college covered courts.
In the all-La Salle Class A Men's showdown, USLS (A) outlasted their Team B compatriots in an hour and 30 minutes of skirmishes to bag the finals' plum of the championship round being played under the Page System format.
The Silaynons contained the UCPB smashers, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 25-23, to show the dominance they earlier manifested in the elimination round, where they have an unblemished win-loss slate.
Lopue's Department Store had earlier claimed the third place honors while the Hawaiian men spikers settled for fourth place in the bracket also composed of Barangay Mandalagan and Rolling Hills.
USLS (B) had to force a rubber match after trouncing Team A, 25-23, 25-15, 25-27, 25-18. But USLS (A) refused to budge, outsmarting their B rivals in a 25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23 decision.
In Class B Women, USLS Alumni defeated reigning titlist Lopue's VI, 25-22, 19-25, 25-15, 26-24, to force a play-off. but USLS took home the crown in two hours and three minutes, 22-25, 25-17, 25-23, 27-29, 15-9.
The tournament is being sponsored by the Negros Occidental Volleyball Association, headed by Roger Banzuela, and the Negros Occidental Culture and Sports Foundation.
Banzuela said the competition aims for "continuity of volleyball games," from the Inter-Club phase to the yearly NOVA-NOCSF Age-Group Volleyball Championships slated in January to March. |
