Bacolod now a Clean and Green Hall of Famer By Christine Mae Pelayo
Bacolod City was finally elevated to the Hall of Fame of the Gawad ng Pangulo sa Kapaligiran after it bagged the coveted “Cleanest and the Greenest Highly Urbanized City” award for three consecutive years - from 2000 to 2002.
The award is considered a better achievement of Mayor Luzviminda Valdez as her predecessors - Evelio Leonardia and Oscar Verdeflor - failed to clinch the distinction during their respective terms.
It was during the Leonardia administration when the Task Force Clean and Green, the body assigned to carry out the city’s beautification campaign, was created.
Both Leonardia and Verdeflor came close to it when they bagged the award twice during their respective stints.
The Gawad ng Pangulo sa Kapaligiran Award is an annual project of the Department of Interior and Local Government and the Office of the President.
Some of the cities that competed for the award were Angeles, Olongapo, Mandaue and Cagayan de Oro.
Dr. Libertad “Nena” Nolido, chairperson of the Task Force Clean and Green, received the award with P3 million worth of livelihood and environmentally-oriented projects from President Macapagal-Arroyo at the Heroes Hall in Malacañang yesterday.
Mayor Luzviminda Valdez, who is presently in Cambodia, expressed her gratitude to all those who contributed in the city’s Clean and Green program.
Acting Mayor Ramiro Garcia hopes the city will continue to keep its surroundings “clean and green.”
Moreover, a caravan will be held on Saturday to celebrate the city’s victory.
A victory program will follow at the BAYS Center. CMP
