24 teams, 8 masters compete in inter-cities
A TOTAL of 24 teams and eight chess Masters will vie for top honors in the Negros Occidental Inter-Cities and Municipalities Chess Team Championship slated Jan. 18 to 19 at the Provincial Barangay Center in Bacolod City.
Among the entries who confirmed their participation are Silay City, headed by FIDE Master Sander Severino; Cadiz City led by National Master Alfred Acaling; Talisay City bannered by NM Rolando Andador; Escalante City spearheaded by NM Hamed Nouri; Kabankalan City led by NM Carlito Lavega; Victorias City, headed by NM Edwin Tan; and Sum-ag, Bacolod City, by NM Eric Gloria; and NM Ronalie Toledo of Barangay Taculing, Bacolod City.
Other teams who signified their intention to join are La Carlota City, Bago City which has two teams, municipalities of Hinigaran and Murcia, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation, Pepsi Cola Products Philippines, Gano Excel International, Smart Communications Inc., Southern Negros Chess Team, West Negros College, Negros Batang Pinoy, Philippine Coast Guard; Barangay Taculing, Handumanan, Mansilingan and Barangay 16, Sum-ag in Bacolod City.
Governor Joseph Maraņon Championship Cup, cash prizes, trophies and medals are at stake to the top five team winners and individual board champions.
The project is a joint effort of the Provincial Sports Development Program Office, National Chess Federation and the Negros Occidental Chess Association, and is being supported by the Department of Interior and Local Government.
Additional entries from the different cities and municipalities of Negros Occidental are expected to confirm their participation this week.
