No case v. NPAs unless suspects identified: PNP By Claudine C. Dumalag
EVEN if the New People’s Army owned responsibility over the blast of the Globe Telecommunication cell site in Brgy. Balintawak, Escalante City last Jan. 4, no criminal charges could be filed without the identity of the suspects.
“I’m glad that they admitted the crime. Duda talaga ako noon sa kanila,” said Senior Supt. Vicente Ponteras, provincial police director, who, however, said they could only file a case against the NPA if the suspects are identified.
In a press statement signed by Ka Frank Fernandez, NPA island commander, the rebel group admitted that they were the ones who lobbed a gasoline-filled bottle at the cell site which damaged about P300,000 of Globe’s cable and transmission wires.
But the NPA said the blast was “a punishment to the Globe Telecommunication company in Negros owned by the Ayala-Zobel.”
They claimed that it was meted because Globe refused to pay revolutionary taxes which is their obligation as one of “the big businessmen in the province.”
Ponteras said the Globe management has not sought police assistance until now.
He also said that he has already directed Senior Insp. Castor Luluma, Escalante police chief, to pull out the policemen earlier ordered to be detailed near the site.
“As if ang nangyari parang balewala na lang ang incident sa management ng Globe,” said Ponteras. CCD
