Negros not in critical situation - Napocor By Christine Mae Pelayo
NEGROS Occidental is not in a critical situation in terms of the effect of the reported power interruption next month, said Zosimo Briones, National Power Corporation branch manager.
Briones attended a meeting with the Department of Energy, Napocor and the National Electrification Administration in Manila Wednesday to discuss the impending power interruption in Western Visayas.
Briones told Sun.Star they came up with a short-term solution to address the power interruption in the region.
“There is a short-term solution to prevent the power interruptions, but the DOE focuses more on Panay Island because its situation is critical, while that in Negros is not,” said Briones.
He added that the DOE plans to transfer a power plant in Luzon to Panay which is currently suffering from a power crisis.
Moreover, he said the Philippine National Oil Corporation-Energy Development Corporation geothermal plant will be operational in 2005, which will provide the province a 40-megawatt power supply.
“The 40-megawatt is already sufficient to stabilize the province’s power supply,” he said.
Earlier, Benedicto Peralta, Central Negros Electric Cooperative acting general manager, said Genco 4 Visayas Geothermal has scheduled a power shedding in Negros in February which will cause power blackouts for more than three hours.
Power shedding allows the shifting of available power energy from one electric cooperative to another.
DOE Sec. Vince Perez earlier warned power cooperatives in the region of a possible power crisis./CMP
