TFI identifies 31 villages as critical By Avelyn Z. Agudon
THE Task Force Ilahas has identified 29 barangays in Negros Occidental as illegal logging hotspots, prompting authorities to ask the help of village officials in helping guard the remaining forest reserve.
Senior Insp. William Señoron, commander of the 2nd Provincial Mobile Group and TFI’s action officer, said these illegal logging hotspots are still subject for classification as to whether they are areas of concern or of immediate concern.
Señoron said he will present the list of the hotspots to the Philippine Army and Provincial Environment and Management Office for them to classify whether the areas have history of massive illegal logging and charcoal making.
They will also determine if reforestation was implemented in these areas.
Based on TFI’s records, the illegal logging hotspots in southern Negros are barangays Damutan, Culipapa and Asia in Hinobaan; barangays Kamindangan and Manlocahoc in Sipalay City; barangays Payawan and Gatuslao in Candoni; barangays Carol-an and Camingawan in Kabankalan City; Brgy. Carabalan in Himamaylan; and barangays Santol and Amontay in Binalbagan.
In northern Negros, hotspots are barangays Canlandog, Pandanon and Amayco in Murcia; barangays Bagong Silang, Bunga and Bago in Don Salvador Benedicto; barangays Minapasok and Marcelo in Calatrava; barangays Quezon and Prosperidad in San Carlos City; Brgy. Puey in Sagay City; Brgy. Villacen in Cadiz City; Brgy. Gawahon in Victorias City; barangays Patag and Tayap in Silay City; Brgy. Canlusong in E.B. Magalona; and barangays Katilingban, San Fernando and Kabatangan in Talisay City.
Gov. Joseph Marañon had earlier said in order to address the worsening forest denudation in the province and for a more efficient campaign against illegal logging, some of the police and military detachments will be relocated.
But Col. Victor Ibrado, commanding officer of the 303rd Infantry Brigade, said they will not only relocate their detachments, but will also set up one in Crossing Balea, Brgy. Lagaan in Calatrava.
Based on reports, trucks loaded with illegally cut logs from Don Salvador Benedicto, where massive cutting of naturally grown trees occurred, pass by Crossing Balea going to Calatrava proper./AZA
