Women, youth condemn Bush on war vs Iraq By Christine Mae Pelayo
THE Alliance of Youth Against War (Ayaw) and the women sector have condemned US President George W. Bush’s intent to go to war against Iraq.
This was the common sentiment shared by both camps as they held a noise barrage Saturday and Sunday at the median island of corner Gatuslao- Gonzaga streets to commemorate the 25th International Women’s Day celebration.
Joining them were the close to 1,500 women workers spearheaded by the Solidarity of Women’s Right and Dignity (Sword) advocates; members of the Student Catholic Action of the Philippines; and the more than 50 student leaders from the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, University of St. La Salle, Riverside College, Technical University of Philippines, Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod, and La Consolacion College, among others.
“Yes to Peace, No to War!” called out the rallyists who trooped the streets to likewise dramatize their protest against President Arroyo’s support to the US.
“We urge GMA to withdraw her support to Bush. We condemn all kinds of war whether internal or international,” said Mark Anthony Pabon, Ayaw spokesperson.
Pabon said the administration’s support to the US’ planned attacks would only affect the country’s economy citing the recent increase in oil prices, petroleum products, and other basic commodities.
“Our parents are heavily burdened because of the fare increase and the series of oil price hike,” said Pabon.
In Ayaw’s press statement, they said the youth "have an ultimate obligation to guard their future."
The group further said that "they oppose any economic embargoes, bombings and all forms of US repression."
