Banzuela remains as Nopsscea sports TF head By Jerome S. Galunan, Jr.
THE Negros Occidental Private School Sports Cultural and Educational Association (Nopsscea) has retained multi-awarded sportsman Roger Banzuela as sports task force chairman for school year 2003-2004.
Banzuela, who resigned last July 4, will remain in his post by virtue of the decision made by the Nopsscea board in a recent meeting.
Banzuela said the decision was made while he was still in Choong Chong Nam-dg Nam-doh, South Korea for the Inter-Peace and Sports Festival, where the Philippines emerged as champion in the women’s division, and runner-up in the men’s category.
Banzuela joined the squads in his capacity as the Philippine Amateur Volleyball Association (Pava) president.
He disclosed that the Nopsscea board wanted him to finish his task in this current school year.
“Fr. Emil Jaruda, OAR did not accept my resignation,” said Banzuela.
Jaruda is the Nopsscea president.
Banzuela, concurrently the varsity sports director of the University of St. La Salle, filed his resignation due to personal reasons.
It came after the Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod (CSA-B) pulled-out from Nopsscea this year although it was not clear whether Banzuela’s resignation has to do with CSA-B’s decision.
The bemedalled coach earlier said he told Jaruda during their last meeting that he will resign if some schools are not satisfied with his performance.
He refused to further discuss the reasons of his earlier exit as Nopsscea task force chair except expressing that he is “moving on to the higher call as Pava head.”
As Pava head, Banzuela led the members of the women national volleyball team who defeated the Malaysian squad in the finals of the Inter-Peace and Sports Festival.
The women’s team featured two Negrense prides - Glenda Pintulo and Cecil Tabuena - who were with Team Philippines which beat their Russian counterparts going into the finals, 3 sets to nil.
Both are former University of St. La Salle standouts.
The squad, which was formed six months ago following a reorganization made by the new Pava Board, showed that they are not to be taken lightly by the other teams and most specially by their Southeast Asian counterparts whom they will meet in the forthcoming 2003 Southeast Asian Games (Seag)to be held in Vietnam.
Along with the Bacoleños in the squad are Mary Jean Balse, Marieta Carolino, Rubie Drubie de Leon, Pine Estrada, Bridget Inoferio, and Ann Eliza Fulo.
