Negrense jins join world championship By Jerome S. Galunan, Jr.
HOMEGROWN jin Jose Emmanuel "JE" Enriquez of the Negros Taekwondo Union (NTU)-Tigers will fly to South Korea on July 20 to train for the forthcoming 17th World Championships slated September in Germany.
A native of Bago City, JE earned the slot in the Philippine Taekwondo Contingent (PTC) two and a half-years ago, and is a veteran of the Samsung Cup Best-of-the-Best, and of the Southeast Asian Games (Seag).
As mainstay of the PTC, JE also boasts of training with the Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) and carried the country’s colors to various international kickfests here and abroad.
Enriquez is Team Philippines’ bet in the finweight division.
His father, Joe, was also trained in various martial arts particularly karate and has popularized the sports discipline in Bago City.
Now a varsitarian of San Beda College, JE has Jim-Jim Chua, NTU-Tigers head coach, as trainor back here in Negros Occidental.
On the other hand, 13 NTU Tigers are still battling for top slots in the Samsung Best-of-the-Best National Taekwondo Championship calendared July 14-20 at the Glorietta Activity Center, in Makati City, Manila.
In the eliminations, Baguio City’s Michael Velo subdued Marlon Ventura of Nueva Ecija, 7-1, in the senior men’s finweight category.
The Baguio pride shared the limelight with other RP mainstays including Roberto Cruz and JR Rivero.
The tournament will serve as a tune-up game for the RP jins that will compete in the Seag in Vietnam and in the 2004 Athens Olympics.
The Samsung tilt allows participation from players who are gold medalists of the Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao Interschool Taekwondo Championships.
In the Visayas leg held at the Robinson’s Place - Iloilo, the NTU-Tigers bagged 13 gold medals, 4 silvers and 5 bronzes in the last Visayas Interschool Taekwondo Championships.
The gold medalists are Crystal Pauline Reyes of Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod Red Eagles in the 5’0-5’3 level; Jeremiah Enriquez, CSA-B, bantamweight junior men; Darryn Amisola, St. Scholastica’s Academy, flyweight junior women;
Kristine Therese Chua and Jimbery John Chua, both of Trinity Christian School, in the 4’0-4’6 Advance and 3’9-4’0 Novice, respectively; Jacqueline Weshler, University of St. La Salle-Bacolod, 4’0-4’3 Novice;
Michael Telequido, Talisay Elementary School, 4’0-4’3 Advance; Ma. Daphne Alindogan, Talisay Elementary School, 4’6-4’9 Advance; Andy Perdigueros, Talisay City, flyweight junior women; Jiji Grace Garcia, St. Joseph’s High School, bantamweight; Kevin Ruiz and Jade Gonzaga, both of Talisay, finweight junior men.
Twenty-one of the 25 players sent by the NTU in the Visayas Interschool Championships garnered top medals.
