Uran holds refresher course

THE United Referees Association of Negros will hold a refresher course Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Victorias National Science High School (VNSHS) Alumni Center, Victorias City.

The new and amended rules of FIBA will be tackled during the event.

Uran president Rolando 'Jack' Maraņon said other topics to be discussed include: the interpretation of FIBA rules, mechanics of officiating, officiating dogmas and values organization and management planning.

Victorias City Vice Mayor Severo Palanca, City Sports Coordinator Gaudencio Corona, Jr. and VNSHS Sports Coordinator Rey Fama are the expected guests in Wednesday's affair.

The benefactors of the endeavor are councilors Eleanor Cabanilla and Botoy Tornea, VNSHS-Alumni Association president Guiling Juele, Ramsy Panes and VNSHS Principal Leticia Besas.

The activity is being spearheaded by Uran-District III coordinator Jun Lacson and Romeo Gador of the secretariat. Edsel Dereza and Jimmy Gaerlan provide the facilities.

An Uran convention was also held last Aug. 1 to 3 at the Laura Beach Resort in Cadiz City. The event, participated in by 200 referees, aimed at giving the members health and accident insurance.

Organizers disclosed that through the convention their jobless members will likewise be given livelihood.

The three-day convention focused on the orientation of all Sangguniang Kabataan chairmen, coaches, village representatives and referees regarding the interpretation of the new Federation of International Basketball Association (Fiba) rules.

The Uran headman further said that the organization looks forward to a united group of referees to help the members uplift their capacity in basketball refereeing.

Through the conference, the group also re-learned the basics of proper officiating, added Maraņon.
