Army files murder raps v. communist rebels
By Claudine C. Dumalag

THE 303rd Infantry Brigade filed charges for three counts murder and one count of frustrated murder against seven New People's Army (NPA) rebels for the ambush-slay of three 11th IB troopers in Canlaon City two months ago.

Charged were NPA-Negros Island commander Frank Fernandez, Roberto Marapo, Southern-Negros area commander Virgilio Paragan, Reginaldo Lanutan, Emma Calderon, Joan Calderon and a certain "Ka Atoy."

Also facing charges are several John Does.

The suspects were linked to the ambush and death of the Army troopers identified as 1Lt. Gesson Regner, 31, 11th I.B. Charlie Company chief, of Bohol; Staff Sgt. Edwin Allin, from La Castellana; and Private Jonaldo Javier, of Valladolid, both of Negros Occidental.

The troopers suffered several gunshot wounds in the various parts of their body when close to 30 armed men, allegedly members of the NPA's Larangan Guerilla 1, peppered their vehicle with bullets.

Investigation revealed the victims were on their way back to the detachment in Barangay Linuthangan, Canlaon to distribute combat boots to members of the Citizens' Armed Force and Geographical Unit (Cafgu) when they were fired at by armed rebels using M14 and M16 assault rifles, M203 and Garand rifles.

Regner and Allin died immediately while Javier died on the way to San Carlos City hospital.

The wife of Allin, Maria Julita, sought assistance from the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) last month in the filing of charges against the suspects.

Reports indicated that the suspects also took the victims' cellular phones, M16 and M14 rifles and .45 caliber pistol.
