THE Regional Development Council foresees power shortage in the Panay Grid next year, disclosed Mayor Luzviminda Valdez Tuesday.

"The power shortage is a very serious matter particularly as we enter 2004. If this cannot be immediately resolved then Panay will have a problem next year," said Valdez.

She assured Negrenses and Bacolodnons though that the situation will not be as bad in Negros Occidental.

Valdez said the power shortage in the province will still come after two to three years.

"We still have enough time to prepare on what to do in terms of generating power," said Valdez.

She said the main power plant in Palinpinon, Negros Oriental that generates power for the region is having difficulty in producing electricity for consumers.

Palinpinon also serves consumers in Cebu and areas in the Visayas.

"It is really important that we should increase the generation of power," said Valdez.

She cited the environment-friendly coal-based power plant in Panay to be placed in Antique to augment power supply needed by the provinces.

"It can more or less solve the problem for the first year and this is a Korean-based technology. It was already approved by the RDC and it already went up to the Energy Regulatory Board and National Power Corporation," said Valdez.

Earlier, Valdez attended a briefing at the RDC where she was chosen as the new RDC chairman in Western Visayas.

"I am happy to report that I made a milestone as the first woman RDC chairman who is also a city mayor because most RDC chairs are governors," said Valdez.

Valdez said they discussed about the Advisory Committee Meeting on Oct. 30.

She further said they will present the listing of projects to the various representatives in Western Visayas for the possible fundings in the Development Fund.

"The lists of project have been approved during the previous RDC meeting and it is a matter of advising them in terms of the focus of the development of the region," said Valdez.

Moreover, Valdez said they also discussed the unemployment problem in Western Visayas.

"We need to focus also on the problem of unemployment in Western Visayas," said Valdez.
