100 tankers to join 2nd Mayors’ Cup swimfest By Jerome S. Galunan, Jr.
MORE than 100 swimmers are expected to join in the 2nd Mayor’s Cup swimming competition to flash off Oct. 17-18 at the Sta. Fe Resort swimming pool, Barangay Granada, Bacolod City.
Tournament manager Rafael Nava said the competition will be disputed in seven open age-group categories. These are the 6-and-under, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-17 and 18-and-above levels.
He further disclosed the tournament is also open to national tankers who are interested in participating.
National tankers expected to enlist in the competition are Katrina Alagaban, Dominique Balinas and Bernie Galang, among a group of eight Negrense swimmers who had seen action in the just-concluded 27th Southeast Asian Age-Group Swimming competition in San Pablo City, Laguna.
With them in the quest were Ronald Martin Parreñas, Roberto Justiniani, Jr., Erica Ledesma, Mabelle Cacho and Tia Lacson.
Other top local swimmers competing in the tournament are Miguel Villanueva, Carmela Nava, Carlo del Carmen, Nhelcris Tortogo, Chakie Villanueva, Herjan Villanueva Enrique Sayson, Sulivan Limsiaco and Michell Petero.
Villanueva booked four golds in the secondary boys of the just-concluded Nopsscea games while Nava hauled three golds in the girls’ division.
Meanwhile, Del Carmen took the overall title in the elementary boys.
Nava said teams expected to join the tournament are from Cebu, Bohol, Dumaguete, Iloilo, Iligan and Manila.
Local teams that have confirmed their participation in the tournament are: Little Crocs Swimming Team of Greg Villanueva, Andrew Balinas-mentored Panaad Swim Team, University of St. La Salle Penguins, Group K Sea Eagles Swim Team under Peter John Alpay, Talisay Swimming Team, Jose Galos’ Tiger Shark’s Swimming Team, Barakuda Swimming Team of Francisco Guanco, Sta. Fe Aquatic Swim Team under Oscar Villanueva and Sta. Fe Swimming Team and the visiting Silliman Swim Team of Dumaguete City and Iloilo Swim Team.
Other teams expected to see action are the Jojo Balanza-mentored Canonoy Swimming Team of Hinigaran, Bago City Swimming Team under Danny Padronia, D3 Reagent Pearl Swimming Club-mentored by Andy del Rosario, Giselle Sanchez’ Nature’s Swimming Club and the invited tankers from St. Mary’s School of Cagayan de Oro, Aquatic Swim Team of Iligan City, Cebu Swim Team and the Bohol Swim Team.
The two-day hostilities is being bankrolled by Bacolod City Mayor Luzviminda Valdez through close coordination with Speedo, makers of swimming equipment.
