Candoni tops list with underweight kids

CANDONI topped the list of municipalities in Negros Occidental that had underweight pre-schoolers last year, records from the Provincial Nutrition Council showed.

Records revealed that of the 3,363 pre-schoolers aged from zero to six years old, 17 were severely underweight while 352 were moderately underweight or a 10.97 prevalence rate.

Based on the prevalence rate, Isabela followed Candoni with 9.97 percent.
Of the 8,847 pre-schoolers in Isabela, 62 were severely underweight while 820 were moderately underweight.

Following Isabela is Moises Padilla with 9.33 percent prevalence or 603 children of the 6,460 were found severely and moderately underweight.

The other municipalities included in the list are: Don Salvador Benedicto with 9.04 percent; San Enrique, 8.54 percent; Cauayan, 8.45 percent; La Castellana, 7.80 percent; Hinigaran, 7.24 percent; Murcia, 7.03 percent; and Hinoba-an, 6.77 percent.

Records further showed that of the 184,144 pre-schoolers weighed from 19 municipalities, 728 were found severely and 9,827 moderately underweight, respectively.

It further showed that the trend on the prevalence of under nutrition among the pre-schoolers in the province decreased compared to that of last year.
From 7.56 percent in 2001 it decreased to 6.59 percent.
