His Life Extreme, 5 others pace 1st Joshua Vidal Cup
HIS Life-Youth Extreme bannered by former University of St. La Salle standout Ryan Concha led five other squads in posting convincing victories over their opponents during the weekend as hostilities in the ongoing 2003 Joshua Vidal Cup Inter-Church Basketball Tournament resumed in various venues in Bacolod City.
Concha, who led USLS to the Nike 3-on-3 national title years back, topscored with 21 points while Ryan Nabor added 11 and Romil Defensor 15 for the win, a 74-55 drubbing of hapless Bacolod Evangelical Church who got 19 points from point guard Melvin Baclay Jr., 17 from Bobby Cepeda and 11 from Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod varsity coach Oscar Aquino.
Meanwhile, Lord Jesus Our Redeemer Church-YRock upset last conference final four qualifier Center for Community Transformation-Negros Christian Church, 98-79, in last Saturday’s second game at the West Negros College Gym with Elmer Santander finishing with a game-high 29 points, Mark Apura with 17 while Francis Javier and Michael Bayotas added 14 apiece.
Raymond Teruel also had 29 points for CCT while Nathaniel Salanga, Bong Dolosa, Archie Sorillo and Junbon Castillo combined for another 36 points in their losing effort.
In other games, Bacolod Christian Church leaned on the 30-point output of swingman Ernesto Cagayao to post a come-from-behind victory over a stubborn Manapla Fellowship Baptist Church quintet, 89-80.
The BCC Warriors, missing the services of guards Stanley Tizon and Ely Olarte, got scoring support from wingman Edward Combong with 19, 15 from slotman Jorcel Panique and a combined 25 points from playing coach Arvin Gustilo, Edu Mustre, Frederick Lim and Geban Espiritu.
Matthew Deles, Nilo Duran and Wilfredo Miralles Jr. tallied 21, 19 and 18 points, respectively, for MFBC.
Last Sunday, defending champion Bible Baptist Church got back into the win column after an opening day loss by defeating His Life Archangels, 80-64, at the Barangay Montevista Covered Court while Bacolod Living Water Christian Fellowship posted a no-sweat victory over Mansilingan First Baptist Church.
Over at the Eroreco Gym, Word International Ministries, mentored by Pastor Kiko Sanchez, posted a 96-78 victory over Cosmopolitan Evangelical Church-Bacolod Christian Education Center School with Jobeth Pedreso combining for 31 points while Eric Deloria and Raul Javelosa Jr. added 10 each.
CEC-BCECS got 22 points from K-One Bornes, 20 from Mark Descutido and a combined 25 points from Joey Vallente and Samuel Ipe.
Games are scheduled to resume Wednesday, 6 p.m., with Cosmopolitan Evangelical Church I taking on His Life-Armour and Bacolod Alliance Church meeting Gardenville Baptist Church.
Eighteen Evangelical Christian churches and organizations are seeing action in this series named in honor of the late Joshua Vidal who pioneered the revival of the league.
The tournament is organized by the Bacolod Christian Center headed by board chairman Wilson Guanzon and executive director Rev. Edwin Madlangbayan.
