Oil firms contribute P20M for streetkids By Clara Mae Hortelano
AS A way of giving back their blessings to consumers, oil companies in the country contributed P20 million this year to the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s various projects, especially to the needy.
DSWD Undersecretary for Operations Celia Yangco disclosed the oil companies led by the Big Three -- Petron, Pilipinas Shell and Caltex Philippines -- shelled out to DSWD P2.50 for every 10 liters that the consumers purchased.
“Thousands of orphaned children under the custody of DSWD were sent back to school,” said Yangco of the oil firms’ contribution to DSWD’s livelihood programs to the recipients.
She noted the amount was used to support the beneficiaries’ food, shelter, clothing, values formation, and technical and vocational training in automotive, mechanical, electronics, electrical, refrigeration and air-conditioning, computer trades and carpentry courses, among others.
DSWD’s records revealed street children reached 200,000 nationwide.
Yangco, who graced the launching of Caltex Fund for Western Visayas at the Calvary Chapel in Barangay Handumanan, Bacolod Monday said because of budget constraints they are tapping the support of other sectors to address the growing number of street kids and disadvantaged children.
She added they are also closely coordinating with the private sector, especially those companies that have a sense of mission to help those in need.
“We are encouraging them to give back to the community all the blessings they receive throughout the years,” said Yangco.
She also said they are strengthening their partnership with the business sector to help the poor.
“The business sector, government agencies and non-government organizations should work together to help the society especially the children,” Yangco said.
