SP reviews laws on anti-littering By Christine Mae A. Pelayo
TO MAINTAIN Bacolod City’s Hall of Fame award as the Cleanest and Greenest Highly-Urbanized City in the country, village officials of Barangay Granada proposed an ordinance for proper waste disposal.
Though intended only for the barangay, the ordinance seeks to prohibit “throwing and/or scattering of dirt, papers, refuse or any materials considered as waste in public streets, sidewalks, public parks, vehicle terminals and public edifices and imposing penalties for violation.”
Councilor Lyndon Caña, chairman of the Committee on Environment Protection and General Services, said the Sangguniang Panlungsod will look into the proposed measure to avoid conflict with the city’s various environmental ordinances.
“The barangay ordinance, if approved by the council, will just be applicable to Barangay Granada. It (ordinance) is not intended for all areas in the city,” said Caña.
He also said that the city has its own city-wide campaign against waste disposal, especially environmental pollution, citing the approved Environment Code and the Solid Waste Ordinance, to maintain cleanliness in the city.
More barangay ordinances
Aside from the proposed measure, officials of Barangay Granada are also pushing for ordinances prohibiting stray dogs along the streets and other public places and prohibiting the construction of structures encompassing road easement, drainage and waterways along the streets of the barangay.
